Has Baptist, Christian, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, 2 banks, a broom factory, an ice plant, a saw mill, a planing mill, 5 hotels, a public library, electric light and water companies. Three weekly newspapers the News Otero County Advertiser and La Nueva Epoca are published. The New Mexico Institute for the Blind is located here.
