Otero County was created January 30, 1899, from the parent counties of Doña Ana, Lincoln and Socorro.
The County Seat is Alamogordo.
Within the boundaries of Otero County are Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, National Solar Observatory, Otero County Prison Facility, and White Sands National Park
